The Symposium is titled 'Society, Natural Resources and Development in Madagascar, recent Contributions by the Research Community' and is hosted by the School of Development Studies and the Sainsbury Research Unit of the University of East Anglia.  The Symposium Chaiman is Professor John Mack.

As you will see from the enclosed information it is to be a multi-disciplinary event, aimed to encourage the research community to share their work widely, across disciplines and to consider its impact to Madagascar. The two days will also stimulate new research and practical collaborations.  As well as several high profile plenary speakers from the UK to kick start each session, we have researchers coming from Paris, Madagascar, the USA and across the UK to present their work.

We would like to theme the lunch on Saturday 31st March as a networking event, to allow charities working on Madagascar the opportunity to network with researchers (and vice versa) to encourage them to explore new opportunities for collaborations and more applied research.

E-mail from Hilary Bradt

Some of you know that I put forward the President's "Durban Vision" for one of the annual awards presented by the British Guild of Travel Writers. I nominated it for the Globe Award for a tourism project which attracts over 250,000 visitors a year. I actually never thought it would be accepted (usually the projects are museums or such like) but the presentations were last night and I'm delighted to say that Madagascar received the highest number of votes from the members present. The shortlist of three (the other nominees are: Holocaust Memorial and Museum, Berlin; Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow ) will go forward to a secret postal vote from the membership as a whole, and the winner will be announced at the Awards Dinner at the Savoy on November 5.

I now have to write a winning pitch to ensure that Madagascar emerges the clear winner!

I'll keep you all informed.

Best wishes,

Hilary
